Many believe that birthstone colors found their origin in the bible. Colors with Meaning were first mentioned in the book of Exodus around 1300 BC when God commanded Moses to make the "Breastplate of Aaron." The twelve gemstones representing each of the Twelve tribes of Israel are said to be of the zodiac signs of that time.

Gemstones began to be associated with specific months around the 18th century. This meant that each person had to own one stone for each month. That tradition was later changed and they began wearing only the gem that represented the month of their birth which continues today.

For a number of reasons the months have varied. One reason is that the people from different countries had their own preference of gem stones.

The National Association of Jewelers adopted a standardized list in 1912.
