January Birthstone Cross necklace
The Birthstone for January is Garnet. The January Birthstone Color is Deep Red.
The garnet is the fourth stone in Aaron's breastplate. Garnet displays the greatest variety of color of any mineral, occurring in every color except blue. It is deep, rich red or purple-red, but can range in color from pale orange to dark red. The garnet has been known for thousands of years and in ancient writings was likely referred to as ruby or carbuncle.
Garnets were used in Asia and India as ammunition in the belief that their red color would inflict a more deadly wound. A number of Garnet missiles were kept as curiosities from a rebellion in India in 1892. Stories of Indian wars in the Southwest also mention the use of garnets in this manner.
The Egyptians wore garnets as talismans, and the Greeks as long ago as 500 B.C., were the first to use garnets as signet rings
