The March Birthstone is Aquamarine
Aquamarine is the modern March Birthstone color. Aquamarine is a member of the beryl family and vary's in color from deep blue to blue-green of different intensities, caused by traces of iron. The most prized color is a deep-blue aqua color. Aquamarine is suggested as a gem to give on the 16th and 19th wedding anniversaries, and is the birth stone for the Zodiac sign of Scorpio. The name aquamarine comes from the Latin word "aqua" meaning water and "mare" meaning sea, because of it's resemblance to the color of the sea.
According to legend 2000 years ago Emperor Nero used aquamarine as an eyeglass. Much later it was used in Germany to correct shortsightedness. The German name for eyeglasses today is "brille", derived from the mineral beryl.
