About Emeralds

The Emerald gets its name from the French word "esmeraude” and the Greek root "smaragdos” meaning 'green gemstone.' Excavating tools have been found in emerald mines in Egypt dating back to the reign of Rameses II in 1300 BC. The emeralds worn by Queen Cleopatra reportedly came from mines in Southern Egypt, near the Red Sea.

The emerald belongs to the beryl family of minerals, and because of their beautiful shades of green are much sought after. They can be found in many areas of the world, including Zambia, Brazil, Pakistan, Norway, Austria, India, Malagasy and Australia. In the US they are found in state of North Carolina. _____________________________________________________________________________
